Hon. Bakary Y Badjie, Minister of Youth and Sports has on Friday inaugurated the Newly elected National Youth Council members (Board) at NaNA conference hall in Kanifing. The inauguration opened the door for the new council to kick start work in representing the interest of young people in the council (Board).
Speaking to young people, Hon. Badjie said the government of the Gambia is cognizant with the fact that youth form 67% of the county’s population, as a result addressing their concerns and interest with the utmost urgency it deserves, has been the primary objective of the Government.
"As enshrined in the National Development Plan 2018 – 2021 Strategic Priority Seven, “Government is determined to realize its commitment to “leave no youth behind”, as it recognizes that youth are the engines of growth and will be the essential pillar for any development that The Gambia aims to achieve," he said. He added that equity in resource allocation and a nationwide approach to national development through investment in youth will thus be adopted at all levels of Government.
"As a result, the Government’s goal for the sector is premised on “Secured sustainable livelihood for youths through skills development, decent work and excellence in sports”.
He revealed: "As part of our immediate actions, we will soon table the National Youth Policy 2018 – 2028 to the cabinet for consideration and approval. Massive popularization programmes on the Policy will follow among all stakeholders and partners so it serves as the main guide for interventions in Youth Development."
He advised the new council members to effectively represent the interest of the young people. "Remember the entire youth of this country comprising 67% of the populace have their eyes on you. You will be the drivers and the architectures of our hopes in the coming two years. You have a task, either to build a legacy or crumble the already existing structures. You must intensify your efforts and know that the position you are holding is not ordinary," he said.
