The Gambian leader, His Excellency President Adama Barrow, yesterday night handed the Gambia's National flag to the National senior football team, the Scorpions, at a gala dinner held at the State House in their honour.
While addressing the Scorpions, President Barrow, urged them to serve as good Ambassadors of The Gambia in their performance on the pitch and outside the pitch.
President Barrow went on to enjoin the football players to be courageous and work together in other to achieve their desired goals.
In addition to the words of encouragement, the Gambia Government under the leadership of His Excellency President Adama, last night announced the transfer of ninety million dalasi (D90,000,000), to the account of the National Coordinating Committee (NCC) as contribution towards the teams successful campaign in Cameroon.
Disclosing the unprecedented development, Honourable Bakary Y. Badjie , Minister of Youth and Sports observed that the financial support to the NCC is evident of government's commitment to the development of young people but also transforming Gambian sports.
“This is a huge moral boater. "I wish to thank the government through H. E President Adama Barrow for the unflinching support", Minister Badjie noted.
The gala dinner was attended by dignitaries including cabinet ministers, senior government officials, members of the Gambia Football Federation among other sports enthusiasts.
Pa Modou Jagne, Captain of the team expressed gratitude for the support rendered to the national team. He added that the entire team is committed to making Gambians proud.
For his part, President Barrow renewed his government's commitment to support the National team and sports as a whole.
Soon after the President's statement, institutions at the gala dinner announced their pledges in support of the NCC.
