OPENING REMARKS BY THE HON. MINISTER OF YOUTH & SPORTS AT A TWO DAY DIALOGUE ORGANIZED BY THE NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL

Honourable Bakary Y. Badjie, Minister of Youth and Sports has said that Peace is expensive and we must never play it down.
He made these remarks at the opening of a two-day dialogue organized by the National Youth Council under the Ministry of Youth and Sports with funding from Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Senegal.
The theme for this year’s event is "Ensuring Peaceful Democratic Process in The Gambia "was held at a local hotel in Kololi bring together 70 participants drawn from political parties, members of the Youth Branch of the Inter-Party Committee, Youth leaders, and women.

The event aim at discussing how best peace could be maintained throughout the electoral cycle.
The Youth Minister further said the event is indeed timely that comes at the right time when the political campaign is in high gear ahead of the December 4th presidential polls.
He emphasized that dialogue is the best way to address whatever difference people might have at the community or national level.

He quoted that there is saying "you to must not treat others with cruelty and that much harshly, you must fight others but through peace and dialogue and education”.
Badjie implored participants to use their positions and influence to encourage people through dialogue, to educate each other and maintain peace, especially when they disagree or anticipate conflict.
He discloses that Election is an important mechanism in democratic and peace processes that purpose to provide citizens with an opportunity to choose freely their political leaders and allocate power peacefully.
He added that The government of The Gambia is committed to peaceful campaigns and elections and committed to the welfare of the youth these he called on the youth to be involved in politics of idea s and desist from politics of sentiments, as sentiments can never develop our country.

For his part, Ousman Fatty Chairman NYC said the dialogue is meant to enhance mutual understanding and tolerance between political parties during the electoral cycle, enhance the capacity of the Youth Branch, Inter-Party Committee on their role for a peaceful election.

He encourages young people to be tolerant and peaceful coexistence among youth wing political parties and enlighten the youth on the role of peacebuilding and effective participation in the electoral process towards national development.

Every electoral process has its downside and frustrations that breed tension and violence. In most cases, the biggest numbers of victims of violence are young people. This he attributes to the availability and energy that in most times is taken advantage of. Fatty told participants

" As young people we must remember we have a great future ahead of us and posterity will never forgive us if we allow ourselves to be agents in plunging this country into chaos. Let’s support the promotion of peace, before, during and after the December 4th polls”.
