Minister Badjie Meets Gambia Skaters Association Following Regional Bronze Medal Success

Our Honourable Minister Bakary Y. Badjie last Thursday received a delegation from the Gambia Skaters Association-GSA at his office in Banjul for discussions on the growth and future of skating in The Gambia. The delegation, led by the Association’s Vice President Gibril Jarju, briefed the Minister on their recent trip to Senegal where Gambian skaters secured a bronze medal, a milestone achievement for the young sport in the country. During the meeting, the team shared their progress while also highlighting some of the challenges affecting the development of skating, particularly the lack of a proper training venue and limited equipment for athletes. In r remarks , Minister Badjie commended the association for flying The Gambia’s flag high at the regional level and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting emerging sports. He, however, encouraged the association to organise an internal tournament to help the Ministry better assess participation and activity within the sport across the country.

Turkish Maarif Foundation Explores Education and Sports Collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports

Received in office members of the Executive Board of the Turkish Maarif Foundation (TMF) – the non-profit public entity that provides educational services across 55 countries in the world. The officials who were led by the H.E Fahri Turker OBA, Turkish Ambassador to The Gambia were in the office to brief the Ministry of Youth & Sports on their planned activities in Africa as they continue to expand education with plan inclusion of sports programs. Our discussion centered on areas of cooperation between the Ministry and the Maarif Foundation at the level of both countries and their international sports programs for students.

MoYS Concludes Two-Week ERMS Training for 18 Personnel

The Ministry of Youth & Sports today closed a two-week Electronic Records Management System (ERMS) training organized by the National Records Service-The Gambia . The training conducted in two groups equipped 18 personnel with practical skills in scanning, uploading, classifying, and retrieving documents digitally. Speaking at the closing,Maki gillen NRS representatives commended the Ministry for boldly transitioning from manual filing to an electronic system, describing the training as impactful with impressive participation. Permanent Secretary Mr. Bulli Dibba reaffirmed his commitment to championing the digital drive, assuring staff of management’s full support. The Honourable Minister Bakary Y. Badjie also expressed satisfaction with the exercise, noting that the move from manual to digital has long been part of the Ministry’s vision and aligns with the Government’s Civil Service Reform agenda to modernize public institutions. AASU Honours Youth Minister with 2025 Distinguished Achievement Award

The All-African Students Union (AASU) delegation yesterday paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Youth & Sports in Banjul, where they formally presented the 2025 Distinguished Achievement Award to the Honourable Minister, Bakary Y. Badjie. The award, conferred by the continental student body representing over 350 million students across Africa and the diaspora, recognises the Minister’s outstanding leadership and commitment to youth empowerment and sports development in The Gambia. During the presentation at his Banjul office, the AASU team commended the Ministry’s strides in advancing youth-centred initiatives, including support for entrepreneurship, agro-processing, skills development, and community sports infrastructure. They noted that The Gambia’s youth development interventions continue to serve as a model within the sub-region. Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie Promotes Sports Investment Opportunities at World Cooperation Industries Forum

The Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie, has called on international investors to explore opportunities within The Gambia’s sports sector, highlighting the country’s stability, strategic location, and investor-friendly policies. Speaking during the 14th World Cooperation Industries Forum held in Istanbul, Türkiye, from 11–13 February 2026, Minister Badjie emphasized the growing potential of sports as a driver for youth employment, infrastructure development, and private sector investment. He noted that The Gambia’s open-door policy and conducive business environment provide strong prospects for mutually beneficial partnerships. The Minister made these remarks as part of a Gambian delegation participating in the forum, which brings together government officials and industry leaders to strengthen Africa–Türkiye commercial cooperation. He encouraged Turkish businesses to consider investment in sports infrastructure, management, and related industries that can contribute to youth development and economic growth. On the margins of the forum, Minister Badjie, alongside the Honourable Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, visited the industrial city of Sakarya, where discussions were held with the Mayor, Yusuf Alemdar, on potential areas of cooperation, including sports development and city partnerships. Nationwide Youth Tour Concludes in Banjul with Calls for Action on Sports, Jobs and Inclusion

The nationwide tour and townhall engagements on youth and sports development have officially come to an end with a well-attended meeting held Tuesday at the Wesleyan School Hall on Dobson Street, Banjul. The final engagement brought together young people, religious leaders, the council of elders, community members, sports administrators, youth committees, athletics officials, and other key regional stakeholders to openly discuss issues affecting Banjul and the wider youth population. Discussions centered on major concerns including the state of sporting infrastructures, the challenges surrounding the Banjul Mini Stadium, the need for indoor sports facilities, and calls for stronger collaboration between the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, The Gambia and the Ministry of Youth & Sports to partners for sporting structures such as Gambia High School and others schools. Other issues raised included the status of the Manneh Sillah basketball Lounge, the creation for sports department at the University of The Gambia, lack of ICT labs, the need for a volleyball court, and Banjul’s representation on the The Gambia National Sports Council – NSC. Dodou Oley Janko, Secretary General of the Regional Sports Committee, highlighted Banjul’s absence from the National Sports Council board, while Modou Lamin Sawo of the Banjul Youth Committee raised concerns over limited access to ICT facilities. Ebrima Jaiteh called for improved volleyball infrastructure, and Musa K. Ceesay, Commissioner of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG) in Banjul, spoke on the growing threat of drug abuse among young people. The town hall revolved around six key thematic areas: youth employment, skills and entrepreneurship; youth leadership, participation and governance, sports development and infrastructure; inclusion of women, persons with disabilities and rural youth, health and well-being; sports for development, partnerships and innovation. Representing the Banjul City Council, Sandigie Njie commended the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports and his team for successfully touring the country and closing the engagement in Banjul. He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the consultations would be consolidated into actionable reports to guide future interventions. He stressed the importance of private sector partnerships and entrepreneurship, explaining that skills development empowers young people to become self-reliant and even employers themselves. He noted that while Banjul boasts a vibrant and talented youth population with a rich sporting culture, sustained investment and collaboration are needed to fully harness this potential. Responding to concerns about Banjul’s representation on the National Sports Council, Acting Executive Director of the National Sports Council, Mahmoud Lamin Jawla, assured participants that the matter is being addressed in line with existing regulations and urged patience as steps are taken to resolve it. Other contributions came from Papia Badjie, Director of Urban Agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock & Food Security , who explained youth and women support schemes and value-based grants, and called for inclusive participation in upcoming community food production initiatives. The Executive Director of the NYSS – The Gambia Mustapha Badjie, highlighted how the scheme equips young people with practical skills for self-employment, while Pa Malick Ceesay spoke on the The President’s International Award,the Gambia programme and its benefits for youth development. Immediately after the town hall engagement, the delegation paid a visit to the Banjul Youth Centre in Tobacco Road before proceeding to Lamin CDC, where land has been allocated for the construction of a second stadium. The town hall series is a strong conclusion to the nationwide engagement, reinforcing the importance of dialogue, partnership, and collective action in addressing youth challenges and advancing sports and development in the country.
