The task force responsible for coordinating and raising funds for the successful participation of The Gambia National Team in the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast on Thursday 7th December 2023 held its maiden Press Conference.
The press conference was meant to brief the media and the public on the level of preparation and appeal for support from the public, private, and business sectors in The Gambia and beyond.
Led by the Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports (MOYS), the committee is very much committed to raising funds to facilitate the successful participation of The Gambia.
Ms. Ndey Marie Njie, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports highlighted the Government's commitment to raise the required funds for the Gambia's participation in AFCON.
"Sports especially football is moving to another level and this cannot happen without the commitment of the government. We are more than ready and committed to providing what is needed to successfully participate in the upcoming competition," she assured.
Lamin Kabba Bajo, President, of The Gambia Football Federation said that football has been revolutionized in the past years.
He assured the public that these monies will not go into vain, they will be put to good use.
"Football is not just a joke, it's an investment, it can take this country to another level, " he said.
He added: "It's a national issue so we all should embrace it and for the Gambia the sky is not even the limit, but the start.
Musa Sise a member of the Fundraising and publicity subcommittee called on all Gambians, media, private sector, and businesses to come forward and support the cruciate.
"We are not leaving anything to chances, because it's a Gambian thing, " Sise said.
Sise was quick to add that, the committee will be airlifting 150 people including the team, officials, fans, and others to Ivory Coast.
According to the committee, the Scorpions will be going into camp in Saudi Arabia from December 27, then to Morocco and The Gambia before they travel to Ivory Coast for the tournament proper.
