President Barrow Makes a Surprise Visit to the Independence Stadium
His Excellency President Adama Barrow yesterday toured the newly renovated Independence Stadium in Bakau, a landmark that has stood at the heart of The Gambia’s sporting and national life for decades.
From national celebrations and major public events to historic football moments, the stadium has long served The Gambia beyond football from its official opening in 1984, making it one of the country’s enduring symbols of national pride.
Following extensive refurbishment, the iconic venue is now entering a new chapter as The Gambia prepares to welcome International Football back to home soil.
President Barrow’s tour comes as the stadium was awaiting the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision after inspection, receiving renewed attention ahead of upcoming international fixtures, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
