About CABOS
The Commonwealth Advisory Body on Sport (CABOS) was established by the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) at its meeting in Abuja in 2003 and endorsed by the Commonwealth Sports Ministers in Athens in 2004.
CABOS is responsible for advising the Commonwealth Secretary-General and member governments to ensure strong government engagement and representation in the development of its policy and action-oriented recommendations in alignment with the values and aspirations enshrined within the Commonwealth Charter.
Its mandate is to advise the Commonwealth Secretary-General and member governments on sport policy issues, particularly related to Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) and protecting the integrity of sport.
The volunteer body of up to 15 members is appointed by the Commonwealth Secretary-General.
CABOS membership is drawn from every region of the Commonwealth and includes governments and representatives of the sports community, youth, and academia.
While CABOS members are selected based on competency, expertise, and experience, a key guiding principle is that the body is representative of the diversity inherent to the Commonwealth.
Since its inception, CABOS has been an ardent, evidence-based advocate for sport for development and peace and protecting the integrity of sport, and has become a clearinghouse for research, submissions to ministers, and examples of 'good practice'.
CABOS is an independent body providing advice on sport policy issues, particularly as it relates to Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) and protecting the integrity of sports. CABOS reports to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meetings, and, through the Commonwealth Secretariat, to member governments and key stakeholders.
