The community of Lamin has been given a historic opportunity to shape its future after the Government of The Gambia officially signed and handed over a portion of land in Lamin CDC.
The landmark event, held yesterday morning, marks a major step in promoting grassroots sports and youth development in the area.
The land, covering 255.00m x 306.00m x 626.00m x 100.00m x 100.00m x 530.00m x 140.00m x 150.00m x 353.00m x 100.00m and 246.00m, has been earmarked for the proposed new national stadium.
However, a special portion measuring 450.00m x 379.00m x 308.00m x 246.00m x 327.00m has been entrusted to the people of Lamin for the development of community-led sports facilities and youth-focused projects.
At the ceremony, Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie , Minister of Youth & Sports , described the moment as a victory for his ministry and community of Lamin as its turning point for community empowerment.
“This portion from the demension of land is officially allocated to the people of Lamin,” Minister Badjie announced. “It is being entrusted to the community through the Alkalolu and the Village Development Committee chairman to ensure it remains a permanent asset for all Lamin residents — not for the gain of any individual or private interest.”
The Minister stressed that the land must only be used for projects that serve the common good of the community.
“Whatever projects the people decide to embark on whether sports facilities or other initiatives must strictly benefit Lamin as a whole,” he emphasized. “That is why the allocation has not been given to one person. It belongs to the entire community, based on lessons learned from the past.”
Hon. Badjie further praised the Ministry of Local Government and Lands, led by Hon. Hamat N.K. Bah, for their unwavering support throughout the process.
“We sincerely thank the Ministry of Lands for making this possible, despite the many challenges we faced along the way,” he said.
